Subject: My testimony

In May 1999, shortly after celebrating my 21st birthday and welcoming my newborn daughter, I began experiencing severe health issues. I was a mother of a 3.5-year-old boy and an infant daughter when I started suffering from persistent diarrhea, which soon escalated to include vomiting. Despite multiple visits to my family doctor and seeking second opinions, I was repeatedly told it was just a virus. This continued for three months until I could barely stand and felt extremely cold. My doctor finally sent me to the hospital, where I was admitted and introduced to a GI specialist. After undergoing blood work and a colonoscopy, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Little did I know, this diagnosis marked the beginning of a 20-year journey in and out of hospitals.

Over the years, I underwent a bowel resection of my large intestine, which was later reversed. I was prescribed numerous medications and had a temporary PICC line to facilitate IV treatments and blood draws. Unfortunately, the PICC line was removed due to a blood infection I contracted shortly after routine blood work at McMaster Hospital. The infection landed me in the ICU within 12 hours.

However, there is good news. In the winter of 2022, I met Paul Beatty. At that time, I had an ostomy pouch due to the removal of my entire large intestine, and I was still quite sick, weighing only 100 pounds and suffering from diarrhea and abdominal pain.
